Native binary security audit

A native binary security audit examines compiled machine code, metadata and runtime behaviour. TNKRE covers Nuitka, Go and Rust executables. The usual goal is a documented explanation of behaviour and security findings; a native audit does not promise reconstruction of the original Python, Go or Rust project.

Start with the question the audit must answer

A binary can be examined for very different reasons: investigating unexpected behaviour, locating a crash, reviewing an integrity check, finding embedded resources or understanding an undocumented interface. Define the question before selecting tools. Mapping every function may be less useful than verifying one important execution path with clear evidence.

The assessment starts with the file format, CPU architecture, operating system, available debug symbols and required runtime environment. Stripped symbols, aggressive optimization, packing and custom protection affect the depth and reliability of analysis. Related libraries and configuration can matter as much as the main executable.

Nuitka, Go and Rust need different approaches

Nuitka compiles Python through a native toolchain. Its outputs can retain Python runtime interactions, module information and constants, but they should not be treated as an ordinary PyInstaller bytecode archive. The review may focus on C-API calls, resource loading and native control flow rather than a direct conversion back to .py files.

Go executables can retain runtime metadata that helps identify functions and types, depending on the build. Rust binaries may contain mangled names, trait dispatch structures and code heavily transformed by LLVM optimization. These signals can support interpretation, but neither language guarantees that original names, types or source layouts remain available.

  • Nuitka: compiled Python behaviour, embedded resources and runtime boundaries.
  • Go: runtime metadata, package relationships and relevant call paths.
  • Rust: symbol interpretation, dispatch behaviour and memory-related findings.

Combine static evidence with controlled observation

Static analysis examines the artifact without running its normal workload. It helps identify imports, strings, functions and candidate paths for closer review. Dynamic observation tests a hypothesis against execution in a suitable environment. A finding is stronger when the report explains the difference between what the code suggests and what was actually observed.

Agree whether execution is permitted and whether network access is needed. A program that calls external services may behave differently in an isolated environment. Record these conditions so a limitation of the test environment is not mistaken for an application defect or a universal result.

What should the report contain?

The handover should connect the original question to specific observations. Relevant outputs can include a function or control-flow map, recovered metadata, annotated evidence, identified security issues and the limits of reproduction. Request severity explanations and practical remediation for security findings, rather than a list of unexplained tool messages.

If a modified binary or loader is within the agreed scope, record exactly what changed, the environment used for verification and the known compatibility limits. Patching is a separate deliverable from a report. Preserving a file's launch behaviour is not proof that every original execution path still works.

Prepare a reproducible sample

Include the operating system, CPU architecture, build or compiler version when available, related libraries and a minimal example of the behaviour under investigation. State the expected result and the result you currently observe. Redact secrets and use test configuration instead of production credentials.

TNKRE confirms feasibility, price and timing after sample review. Work is scoped to software you own or are authorized to assess. For a package containing ordinary Python bytecode, Python source code recovery may be the better starting point. For APK or IPA packages, use the mobile application security audit service so platform-specific requirements are considered.
